DofE - June 2024

This year, the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition took place during the first week after the May half-term break. As usual, they had been responsible for selecting their groups. On day one of the trips, they learnt about simple first aid for hiking - what to do in an emergency - as well as recapping how to pitch tents and cook using Trangia stoves. On days two and three, for the actual expeditions, I was reminded how much students are able to thrive when challenged. Showing amazing resilience and focus, despite navigating their way around the countryside more than they should have, they were able to find their way back – I think the longest walk for the whole trip was about 54 kilometres (They should have walked about 26). Some feedback from some of the students just highlights why we do activities like this: DofE has ended up being one of the highlights of our school year! We got to be independent, navigating our way through the South Downs, and cooking our one-of-a-kind dishes. Although challenging at times, everyone had a highly enjoyable time. Whether it was the freedom of being out in the wild or being able to eat food whenever you wanted, everyone wished we were back on DofE when we returned to school.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the staff who joined me for three days each with these super- amazing students. Thank you to Miss Kiernan, Mr Pogiri, Miss Charlton and Mr Yeneralski for all the miles they walked and the support they gave to the students. DofE cannot run without these tireless heroes.

Mr Moore, DofE Co-ordinator
