Y9/10 Geography trip to Iceland - July 2024

Calthorpe Park School recently embarked on its inaugural trip to Iceland, with 50 geography students from Years 9 and 10 exploring this fascinating country over four days and three nights. Accompanied by Ms Chidgey, Mrs Harrington, Mrs Fisher, Mr Heskins, and Mr Talibart, the students immersed themselves in Iceland's unique natural beauty and vibrant culture. The itinerary included a comprehensive tour of Reykjavik, the nation's capital, as well as an in-depth exploration of the country's stunning physical landscapes. Among the trip's many highlights were visits to the awe-inspiring Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, the rejuvenating Secret Lagoons, and the remarkable geysers and Gullfoss waterfalls. Additionally, the group witnessed the dramatic retreat of the Solheimajokull Glacier, offering a first hand look at the impacts of climate change.

Two particularly memorable experiences added to the trip's uniqueness. The students were thrilled to spot a whale while visiting a Black Sand Beach, a rare and exciting sight for many. Another heartwarming moment occurred when the students, known for their impressive singing, serenaded a newlywed couple at a waterfall with Ed Sheeran's "Perfect." This spontaneous performance exemplified the camaraderie and joy that defined the trip. Overall, the journey was a resounding success, leaving both staff and students with unforgettable memories of Iceland's extraordinary landscapes and experiences.
