SLUGG Fest - July 2024

The annual SLUGG-Fest took place on Wednesday, July 17, and we’re pleased to report it was a huge success.

The Glastonbury inspired event commenced in the afternoon, where students spent their time outside participating in various funfair stalls, including the infamous ‘splat the teacher’ and ‘donut on a string’, all of which raised a fantastic amount of money for this year’s chosen charities. These charities consisted of Ocean Stars and the Chrysalis Youth Empowerment, a charity whose aim is to provide resources and educational opportunities to help young African people participate in society and to grow into mature, responsible people. We would also like to thank those who donated to our chocolate tombola, which is always popular amongst the students.

SLUGG-Sound also made a return this year, and after an extremely successful audition process, we had an outstanding lineup of talented students and brave members of staff who all contributed to Calthorpe’s own concert. SLUGG-Sound has always been such a vibrant part of the event, and this year’s performances did not let us down. For the remaining hour of the day, all students spent SLUGG-Sound in the informal setting of the playground, enjoying the brilliant performances from individual singers, student bands, and even surprise appearances from members of staff!

In addition to this, our amazing ELSA team held a different option to students who found SLUGG potentially overwhelming, providing them with a quieter, more peaceful setting to enjoy the afternoon.

As well as having a practical element of the day, all students took part in engaging quizzes and activities all associated with this year’s theme of “Festivals” in their individual tutor groups beforehand, prepping them for the afternoon ahead. These quizzes were made by our talented prefect team, who we couldn’t have planned and executed the day without. Throughout the afternoon, prefects were present at every stall, some effortlessly braiding hair and others supplying face paint and glitter to those students who wanted to display their house colours and show their appreciation for the event. We would like to thank all prefects for making the day such fun for their fellow students.

This event was a wonderful end to the successful academic year, giving students an afternoon of celebration and fun to recognise their efforts and progression throughout the year whilst also raising money for our chosen charities. We loved seeing students embody the event and show their appreciation for the day by donating and taking part in what we had in store.

I can confirm that we raised a total of £2,291.59 from the SLUGG-Fest which will be divided equally between Ocean Stars and Chrysalis Youth Empowerment Network (CYEN).

Finally, we’d like to extend an enormous thank you to every teacher and student who helped make the SLUGG-Fest possible – we couldn’t have done it without you!
