WHAT TO EXPECT

Students will explore the past, present and future of design and will have a great opportunity to attend hands-on, creative workshops. All of which will help in their design development and product analysis skills. This trip will also include 30 min walk and lunch at Holland Park weather permitting.

Students will be divided into two groups based on their working groups (attending on different dates), and each group will have the opportunity to participate in two workshops.

Workshops for Group 1 (Technology):

  • Chairs and Seating: Look at why the chair is the ultimate design challenge and why the user has the last say on whether a chair becomes a classic or a relic.
  • Brand Evolution Challenge: Students learn about the purpose of packaging and the development of supermarket brands from Victorian times to the present day. After undertaking research from the Museum’s collection, students work in groups to improve  packaging designs in relation to consumer habits and market trends.

Workshops for Group 2 (Design):

  • Materials - Smart and Sustainable: A look at materials and the social obligation of a designer to seek new and ever environmentally friendly materials.
  • Sustainability in Packaging: A workshop with environmentalism at its centre, this one hour session will help students to explore historic and contemporary packaging created by our favourite brands, before investigating alternatives to single-use plastics and high waste levels. Students then design their own products looking towards the future with sustainability as their focus.
IMPORTANT: If one of the trip dates is oversubscribed, we reserve the right to move some students to another date in order to fill available spaces, unless is indicated otherwise on the application form.
