3 Peaks Challenge - July 2013
At the end of last school year, 20 pupils and 6 intrepid staff along with a similar sized group from Connaught School tackled the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Months of preparation and fundraising were the motivation behind the gruelling task!
A very early start (for some, it was the first time they had been up that early for many years!) enabled us to reach the summit of Pen-Y-Ghent in just over an hour.
The next few hours were spent making our way acrossfarm and marshland towards our lunch spot and then the foot of our next peak – Whernside, where we passed by the famous Harry Potter viaduct!
Blisters appeared, pain kicked in mentally and physically, but no one was prepared to drop out.
Everyone fought on through the pain barrier until finally, after what seemed like forever, we reached the summit of our third and final peak – Ingleborough.
The group were exhausted and not many stayed awake past dinner! It was a very quiet but long coach journey home the next day, safe in the knowledge that we had completed the challenge in under our original target time. The final official time was 10 hours and 37 minutes. A fantastic achievement by each and every member of the group. Additionally, the group as a whole have raised in excess of £4000 for The Royal Marsden. Every single member of the group pushed themselves to their physical and mental limit. It was not an easy challenge, but they stuck together and dragged each other through, staff included! They were a total credit to themselves, their families and to the school and should be very proud of their fantastic achievement. The challenge is now set for the next group to attempt to complete the challenge and to raise a similar amount for charity. If anyone would like more details about the challenge please contact Mr Jones in the PE Dept.
