GCSE Science Live trip - March 2015
The Year 10 students were given a fantastic opportunity to see and hear five of Britain’s top scientists, all working at the cutting edge of their specialisms, at the GCSE Live event in London this term.
The scientists included Prof. Andrea Seller, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Prof. Steve Jones, Prof. Jim Al- Khalili and the great Prof. Robert Winston demonstrating the wonderful world of Chemistry, Astronomy, Futurology, Human Fertility and Ecology.
Throughout the day there were on stage workshops and influential lectures that will hopefully develop our own students thinking as to how they can change the world through science.

Professor Jim Al-Khalili gave a brilliant talk about special relativity, black holes and time travel. He told us that the faster we go, the more time slows down. A great explanation to such a mind-boggling topic.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock’s talk was very inspiring due to her extreme interest in space. Throughout the talk she explained the different trips to space and of her dream to live on Mars. Her enthusiasm for space illustrated the passion she has for studying the Universe.

Professor Andrea Sella showed us reversible reactions starting with the vibrant pink colour of the indicator Phenolphthalein in alkali. He added just one drop of acid to make it go colourless and then back again to pink with a drop of alkali. Next, he demonstrated the Blue Bottle experiment with its changes of colour back and forth. He explained how some reversible reactions do complete by going downhill using a toy duck moving down a slide to model this. The reactions can finally form the products after taking twists and turns before reaching the end. We visualise them as colour changes.

One of the speakers was Professor Lord Robert Winston. His lecture was extremely interesting, as he covered aspects of conception, IVF and gametes. The section of his lecture that I found most interesting was on IVF as his experience of the topic is so broad and ground breaking.
