Winchester Cathedral - July 2016
An exceptional group of Year 8 and 9 students visited Winchester Cathedral on 12th July to learn about calligraphy and the medieval masterpiece that is the Winchester Bible.
Their visit began with a superb workshop in the Cathedral’s Education Department on how letters were illuminated or decorated. Students also decorated and illuminated their own letters and we were exceptionally impressed with their artistic abilities. This very enjoyable workshop was run by Mr Phillip Johnson who heads the Cathedral Scribes.
Following this initial workshop, students were shown one book of the Bible by Mrs Cheryl Bryan who gave students an in depth explanation of how the Winchester Bible came to be written. Some students were so impressed with the artistry of calligraphy that they bought themselves calligraphy sets at the Cathedral’s gift shop. Needless to say it was an exceptional experience for all of us and our thanks, once again, go to Mrs Cheryl Bryan from the Cathedral’s Education Department for organising such an exceptional experience for our students.
