On the 24 and 25 September, the Year 11 Geographers embarked on a coastal field trip, to Christchurch Bay. Their task was to conduct an in-depth investigation into the impacts of Coastal Management on coastal processes and communities. The investigations were focused on two specific sites, Hengistbury Head and Naish Farm. At each site, the Year 11s had to complete a variety of data collection tasks in their fieldwork booklets. These included drawing accurate field sketches, bipolar analyses, reviewing the current coastal management in place and of course, a firm favourite… a beach profile! The learners were given the opportunity to use ranging poles, clinometers and measuring tapes to accurately deduce how longshore drift might have affected certain areas of the beach, as opposed to those beaches with coastal sea defences. On completion of their tasks, they were treated to a short hike up Hengistbury Head and a beautiful view showcasing Mudeford spit.
