STEM Club Big Bang - March 2015
Having being shortlisted for the award of esteemed Young Engineers School of the Year, key members of STEM Club ( Mike G, Aidan C, Jack P and Alana W) attended The National Big Bang Science Fair at the NEC in Birmingham.
The STEM club team had to present to a selection of judges on how we have developed a STEM culture at school aimed at increasing student interest and engagement in STEM subjects through real world experiences. We showed how school-wide STEM initiatives including STEM projects, national competitions and field trips have fulfilled this vision.
We were delighted to win two trophies. The first was the impressive Young Engineers School of the Year Runners Up Award and the second was for the school-wide commitment to the development of the Space Balloon Launch. The absolute highlight of this extremely successful event was that one of our Year 9 students, Jack P, was selected to be the UK representative at the Broadcom International Masters event in Pittsburgh in May 2015. This is a highly prestigious award available to only 24 young people from around the world each year and we are absolutely delighted that one of our amazing young science and engineering stars has shone in this way.
We are planning to use some of the prize monies from these awards to further develop the school-wide STEM ethos with Scalextric 4 Schools, solar bugs and more programmable hardware.
Our thanks goes to all of the members of STEM club, their dedicated teachers and coaches and of course Young Engineers who are a UK Educational charity who believes that participation in practical Engineering activities provides the best way of encouraging young people to study STEM subjects and take up careers in Engineering.
