Jack P's trip to USA - May 2015

Jack at ISEFJack has recently returned from his amazing American adventure and had this to say about his trip, “My trip to Pittsburgh, USA was absolutely amazing, thanks to the Broadcom Foundation who put on a fantastic week of events for us.  Every day we had two to three activities that were all fun, interesting and educational.  I travelled to Pittsburgh on Saturday 9th May with Rod Edwards, CEO of Young Engineers, and Intel ISEF delegates, Matthew Ardern from Stockport Grammar School and David Steele from Nottingham High School. We attended the Intel ISEF pin exchange where we met the other ISEF and Broadcom delegates and swapped pin badges as a way of getting to know each other.  We all attended the ISEF Opening Ceremony too, which was amazing, a bit like the Opening Ceremony at the Olympic Games as it was all done on a massive scale.

Over the rest of the week, while Matthew and David spent most of their time at the International Science & Engineering Fair, presenting their projects, I had a full programme of activities each day with my fellow Broadcom delegates, and then we all met up again for Intel ISEF events each evening. The 24 Broadcom MASTERS delegates were organised into four groups of six; I was in a group with boys from South Korea, India and Mexico, and girls from America and Singapore.  As well as going out on trips, we spent one morning presenting our projects to each other, where I spoke about the Calthorpe Park STEM Club Space Balloon Project.  Some of my favourite activities included a visit to Carnegie Mellon University where we built a radio, a visit to Disney Research, a trip to the "Rivers of Steel" and the Pittsburgh Hard Rock Café.  We also visited the Carnegie Science Centre and walked through a cold war submarine which was very interesting and cool.

Thanks to the team at Broadcom Masters and the Young Engineers - I enjoyed a fantastic once in a lifetime experience and made friends from all over the world”.

All staff and the enthusiastic 40 student members of STEM Club at Calthorpe Park School are thrilled at being able to be part of this amazing experience, as are Jack’s 2nd Cove Sea Scouts and his old school, Velmead Junior School, who Jack has been able to tell all about his amazing trip.
